Artist Statement
Art is my life and is the means by which I most effectively convey my inner thoughts and the issues that I most deeply care about. These include lifetime experiences, the human condition, global issues, environmental concerns, the beauty of nature and much more.
Generally I express these in abstract form employing vibrant colors, multiple paint layers, collage and other devices such as printed matter, grains of sand and found items. I work in a number of media that include acrylics, oils and encaustics. It is the latter that I have employed most extensively and which provides me with a vehicle to be more expressive. Through layers of wax light reflects and gives the medium extraordinary vibrancy.
Through travel to distant countries I reflect and explore a world beyond my own. The impressions gathered are meaningful to me and cause me to confront my own reality as a part of a larger and richer one.
I rarely start the work with preconceived ideas. Subconsciously I explore and reflect on past events, nature and the condition of humanity. Using random shapes and pools of high color I develop ideas and textures that allude to passion and mystery. As the direction becomes clearer I will embrace the meaning created and develop a metaphor of suggestive drama.
